April 13, 2024

Dear Westside Montessori Community,

It is my great joy to welcome you to the WMS 2024 Art Walk & Auction. This event is not only a chance to have a great time, but also for our community to come together, celebrate our collective achievements, and to show support to our students for their creativity and hard work.

The Art Walk & Auction has quickly become a community favorite, and you can expect great food, music, and entertainment such as carnival games, live animals, and the auction itself, of course. Our teaching faculty and support staff have worked very hard this year to meet the high expectations we set to create truly meaningful and impactful learning experiences. We are looking forward to having you join us on April 27 to be in community and to support our students.

I am sending a huge Thank You to all of our volunteers who have poured in time and energy to bring to life this event. The Art Walk & Auction leadership committee – Hueiyao Hsuan, Niranjan Raj, Zoë Taylor, Rita Sleiman, Coco Willard, and so many other parent volunteers who have been a great team in coordinating our vendors and program details. We are a fortunate community to have such exemplary parent volunteers.

Thank you to all who support WMS, day-in and day-out. We could not do our jobs well without your support.

Enjoy the evening and happy bidding!

April 14, 2023 Dear Westside Montessori Community, It is my great joy to welcome you to the WMS 2023 Art Walk & Auction. The Art Walk & Auction is not only a chance to have a great time in community. Our Art Walk & Auction is a chance for our community to come together, celebrate our collective achievements, and to show support to our students for their creativity and hard work. The Art Walk & Auction is a new parent event that WMS will be hosting in place of the Gala this year. The event promises to be great fun! You can expect activities such as a Paint-and-Sip session with The Art Cellar, carnival games for adults, and the art auction itself, of course. Our teaching faculty and support staff have worked very hard this year to meet the high expectations we set to create truly meaningful and impactful learning experiences. We are looking forward to having you join us on April 29 to be in community and to support our students. I am sending a huge Thank You to all of our volunteers who have poured in time and energy to bring to life this inaugural Art Walk & Auction event. The Art Walk & Auction leadership committee – Zoë Taylor, Zola Solako, and Melissa Zier have been a great team in coordinating our vendors and program details. We are a fortunate community to have such exemplary parent volunteers. Thank you to all who support WMS, day-in and day-out. We could not do our jobs well without your support. Enjoy the evening and happy bidding! Dr. David LaViscount Head of School

Dr. David LaViscount
Head of School

On behalf of the Event Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to Westside Montessori School’s 2024 Starry, Starry Night Art Walk + Auction. We hope that this evening is an opportunity for our WMS community to unwind a little, to enjoy time with friends, old and new, and to raise staggeringly unprecedented funds for the school that we all love.

This special new event is the result of countless hours of effort from our incredible volunteers. So many parents have made tonight’s success their full-time jobs over the past several months and others have generously donated their artistic skills to make this evening possible.

In addition to our wonderful parents, our teachers and faculty have given so much beyond their vocational descriptions, that we are reminded every day of how fortunate our children are to be in this loving environment. Together, everyone has worked tirelessly to make this evening a success, and we are truly humbled by the demonstrated depths of kindness and dedication. We thank them all from the bottom of our hearts.

We wish you all an evening of good fun, great conversation, filled bellies, and emptied wallets!

Cheers,

HOW TO PLAY CORNHOLE

Cornhole is played with two or four players attempting to toss cornhole bags into the hole on a cornhole board to score points.

Objective

Be the first team to reach (or exceed) a score of 21 points at the end of an inning of play.

Cornhole Board Distance

Cornhole board distance: The cornhole boards are placed 27 feet apart from front edge to front edge.

Cornhole Rules

  • Cornhole is played with two teams, each consisting of one player (singles) or two players (doubles).
  • Players pitch their bags in an underhand motion from the pitcher’s box next to each side of the board.
  • Players alternate turns tossing their cornhole bags toward the opposite board.
  • After each team has pitched four bags, players take score, and resume pitching to the opposite board.
  • The team who scored points in the previous inning goes first in the next inning. If it was tied, the team who went first in the last inning gets to go first again.

Cornhole Scoring

  • A cornhole bag that goes through the hole is worth 3 points.
  • A cornhole bag that lands on the board and stays there is worth 1 point.
  • A cornhole bag that lands on the ground or bounces onto the board is worth 0 points.
  • Cancellation Scoring: Only one team can score points per inning. The team with the higher score cancels out the points of the opposing team in that inning.
  • Points Calculation: The team with the higher score in an inning earns the difference in points. For instance, if Team A scores 5 points and Team B scores 2 points in an inning, Team A earns 3 points for that inning.

Winning the Game

A The first player or team to reach or exceed 21 points at the conclusion of an inning is the winner.

HOW TO PLAY JENGA

1. Build the tower to set up the game

The Jenga game has 54 blocks, or wooden pieces that are grouped together in threes to form 18 stories. Each story is stacked so that it lies flat and is at its thinnest vertically. The stories alternate direction by 90 degrees so that each story above and below it are perpendicular in direction to it.

2. Determine who goes first

The person who builds the tower goes first. In the first game, if only one person builds the tower, that’s who starts. If multiple people work together to build the tower, you can come up with some other way to determine who goes first (youngest, flip a coin, odd man out, etc). There’s no real advantage in going first, so don’t sweat it. In subsequent games, the player who knocks over the tower rebuilds it for the next game and is the first to play that game.

3. Remove one block from the tower

Touching the tower with only one hand at a time, the player must remove one block from anywhere below the highest completed level, which means it will either be the 2nd level or below if the top level is complete with 3 pieces OR the 3rd level if the top level is incomplete with 1 or 2 pieces, making the 2nd level the highest completed level.

4. Play the pulled block atop the tower

The player must then play the block atop the tower, in a direction perpendicular to the layer below it. Players may not start a new level until the level below it is complete with 3 pieces.

5. Complete the turn

The player’s turn ends after they have pulled and played the block, as described above, and either:

A: 10 seconds has passed since they played their piece atop the tower

B: The next player touches any block

6. Continue Play Clockwise

Play continues clockwise to the next player until the end of play

7. End play when blocks fall

Play ends when a player knocks over any blocks on the tower other than the one they are playing.

8. Declare the winner

The winner of the game is the last player to successfully complete a turn before the end of play when the tower (or some blocks) are knocked over.

9. Set up the next game

Whoever knocked over the tower sets up play for the next game.

HOW TO PLAY THE HOOK-&-RING GAME

First to Five is less about speed and more about accuracy, rewarding players who can score their hooks faster than their opponents. If you prefer to dial in, get focused, and land a bullseye — then this version is for you.

How To Play:

  1. Set up your hook and ring game so that one arm is hanging off the end of a table that everyone who wants to play has access to.
  2. In each round, every player gets one attempt to swing the ring onto the hook, scoring one point. The first player to reach five points is the winner.
  3. In the event of a tie where more than one player reaches five points, there is a sudden death round, eliminating players until only one is remaining.

3. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the buyer. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer will have the sole and final decision to determine the successful bidder or to re-sell the item in dispute.

4. Group purchases are encouraged and welcomed; however one person must be responsible for bidding and payment. The successful bid will be entered on that person’s bid account and must be paid for in full by that person.

5. Each successful bid will be recorded and entered on the bidder’s account.

6. Payments may be made with cash, check, or online credit card payment payable to Westside Montessori School.

Silent auction purchases will be paid online at the end of the auction.

Our Business Manager, Paige Chonka, will email your invoice for live auction items and raffle items within a few days after the event. Payment may be made by check or online credit card payment, and payment arrangements must be coordinated directly with Paige.

At the end of the evening, Westside Montessori School family members must pick up, and take home, all tangible items won and/or purchased the night of the event unless special arrangements have been made in advance. If you are not a current Westside Montessori School family member, you will be able to pick up all tangible items won and/or purchased after you have received your invoice and payment has been processed. Gift cards and certificates will not be distributed the night of the Art Walk + Auction. Instead, all gift cards and certificates may be picked up from Paige starting on Wednesday, May 1, when the Business Office will begin accepting payments.

Not in Houston? Please ask your WMS connection to pick up you won items from the school. Otherwise, we are happy to arrange shipping for you and add the cost of postage to your bill.
